Liberal Democrats will lead opposition on city council

The Liberal Democrat group on Gloucester City Council have issued a ten-point plan that they will use to form the basis of constructive opposition on the council.  On Monday, a minority Tory administration took office because of the abstentions of the Labour group.

The Liberal Democrats are the second largest group led by Cllr. Jeremy Hilton, he said: “We have a clear vision of how we want the city to progress into the future and we shall use our ten point plan to mount constructive challenge to the Tories. Where we disagree we will vote against the administration, but where we agree we shall support them.”

The Liberal Democrat ten-point plan includes policies to improve the financial health of the council, to slim down the cabinet and to end the use of reserves to fund ongoing revenue expenditure.

Jeremy Hilton confirmed that the group will oppose the building of a waste incinerator within the city, but they will push for improved recycling of household waste.

Cllr Hilton said: “We also intend to press the administration to get on with the project to build a new all weather athletics track in Gloucester.  We feel the city is letting our sports men and women down.”

Declan Wilson who is the deputy group leader; confirm that the group will vigorously oppose the building of an urban sprawl on the green belt to the north of the city. He said: “It is madness to build new homes on green fields that are at risk of flooding when we have plenty of brown field land within the city that remains undeveloped.”

The Liberal Democrat group have indicated that they will support the runway safety project at the council owned Gloucestershire Airport and that they oppose the unnecessary expense of building new council offices, when they believe that Docks complex is perfectly adequate for the council’s needs.
